Panamanian Ports: Ranking of ECLAC

The Panamanian ports returned to occupy the leadership position of the 2017 annual ranking of ports of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) , by unseating the port of Santos in Brazil. The annual report, which collects data on the maritime and logistic profile of each terminal, reveals that the three port companies operating in the Panamanian Atlantic: Manzanillo International Terminal (MIT), Evergreen and Panama Ports Cristóbal , ranked at the top of the ranking Container port published by ECLAC. This due to the joint movement of 3,891,209 TEU, followed in second place by the port of Santos, Brazil , with a movement of 3,578,192, and the Panamanian port of Panama Ports in the Balboa area , in the third place, with 2,986,617 TEU.

ECLAC prepares each year this report that shows the detail of cargo movements in containers in 120 ports in the region, based on information collected directly with port authorities and operators of maritime terminal. In 2017, this activity increased by 6.1% with a total approximate volume of 50.6 million TEU, and Panamanian ports became the leading container movement in the region, driven by the recovery of world trade.From January to December of 2017, the movement of containers increased by 10.1% compared to the previous year, reporting the performance of the activity in the national port system, according to data from the Panama Maritime Authority (AMP).
