Panama: Economic Activity Increases 3%

The Monthly Index of Economic Activity (IMAE) in the Republic, for January-August 2018 increased by 3.09%, compared with the same period in 2017. The monthly interannual variation of August 2018 was 3.37%, compared with the same month of the previous year.
In the January-August period, the main categories of economic activity showing positive behavior were: transport, storage and communications, electricity and water, fishing, public administration, trade and financial intermediation. Transport and communications services showed favorable behavior, principally through the Panama Canal, international passenger transportation by air and telecommunications.
The electricity and water supply showed positive results due to the increased generation of renewable energy, such as hydropower, wind and solar. On the other hand, some activities that had a negative impact were recreation and amusement, construction, and exploitation of mines and quarries.
