'According to the Secretary of Energy (SEP), there are studies being carried out on oil exploration, after Ecopetrol of Colombia found three fields near our border with Colombia, what made us think that Panama could share such fields', business woman Leonor Gomez told Prensa Latina.
'I wish we can find something similar, as those three fields representing over 25 billion dollars for Colombia', said Gomez who heads an initiative by sponsoring companies of the bid to offer Panama as venue of a world conference on the topic.
The first geological study in the last 30 years found traces of hydrocarbons in the Caribbean Sea of Panama, in a zone connected with three natural gas wells in Colombia, the SEP confirmed last January, after prospecting 9,000 square kilometers at 40,000 meters deep.
Petropan is the name of the event designed to gather among others, producers, marketers, transporters, researchers and manufacturers of technologies of the hydrocarbon industry, from October 25 thru 28 this year, in the first World Convention and Exhibition of Oil and Gas, informed the Organizing Committee.
At the presentation of Petropan to diplomatic corps, local businesspeople and the press accredited in the country, a documentary summarizing oil prospecting works was screened, covering a century back since the first studies were done, although to this moment there is no exploration plan ready.
Oil surfaced in the jungle of Darien, shared with Colombia, indigenous communities used for different activities, among others, to seal off their handmade boats, explained Gomez, who now works in Supplies and Products, a firm that certifies specialists of the maritime and oil industries.
