AMP - ARAP: Cooperation Agreement

The Panama Maritime Authority (AMP) and the Water Resources Authority of Panama (ARAP) signed a cooperation agreement with the purpose of coordinating, establishing and strengthening the mechanisms and communication channels necessary to achieve an effective application of all the necessary and pertinent measures to prevent, discourage and eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing on vessels with a fishing license or fishing support, of Panamanian flag, of international service.

The Cooperation Agreement signed between Jorge Barakat Pitty, Minister of Maritime Affairs and Administrator of the AMP and Zuleika Pinzón, General Administrator of the ARAP, will come into effect as of its date of endorsement by the Comptroller General of the Republic, will last of five (5) years and both parties will work in coordination with the purpose of exchanging the necessary information for the execution of this agreement.

Barakat Pitty, expressed his satisfaction to finalize this agreement, which had been working for some time, since it is the responsibility of the AMP to make Panamanian registered vessels, comply with national legislation and international conventions ratified by the Republic of Panama, related to navigation safety, maritime safety, prevention and control of marine pollution; while ARAP is the body that unifies the different competences on fishing, aquaculture and other related activities, reaffirming the commitment of the State, to exercise control over the fishing fleet and implement and follow up on the measures established to prevent, discourage and eliminate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing (IUU), as part of the strategies of the Action Plan against Illegal Fishing, of the Organization of

The United Nations for Agriculture and Food (FAO for its acronym in English), and the United Nations Convection on the Law of the Sea, 1982, (CONVEMAR), with a view to achieving conservation and management of resources aquatic fishing.
