Panama to Host the 7th IUCN World Congress on Protected and Conserved Areas in 2027

Posted on 2025-10-12

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has announced that Panama will host the 7th World Congress on Protected and Conserved Areas in September 2027, marking the event’s return more than a decade after its last edition.

IUCN Director General Grethel Aguilar highlighted the importance of the decision, stating:

“We are delighted that Panama will host the IUCN World Congress on Protected and Conserved Areas in 2027. As one of the world’s most biodiverse countries — where tropical forests, mangroves, coral reefs, and oceans meet — Panama offers the perfect setting for this global gathering.”

The IUCN World Congress on Protected and Conserved Areas is one of the most significant international events focused on biodiversity, environmental conservation, and sustainable ecosystem management, bringing together governments, scientists, organizations, and local communities from around the world.

Panama’s selection underscores its global recognition for environmental protection efforts and commitment to sustainable development policies. The congress is also expected to have a positive impact on ecotourism, the green economy, and Panama’s environmental leadership on the global stage.

With this designation, Panama strengthens its position as a regional leader in sustainability and conservation, reaffirming its commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and to protecting the planet for future generations.
