Panama's financial landscape is undergoing a swift evolution in how people access and transfer money. Out of a total population of 4.2 million, the country now registers 3.9 million banking clients holding over 5.1 million deposit accounts, according to official data from the Superintendency of Banks of Panama (SBP). Yet, the most noticeable shift is happening outside traditional brick-and-mortar branches and directly on mobile screens.
A Latin American payment study published by IPSOS highlighted that the use of digital accounts and mobile wallets in Panama surged by 72% over the past year. This growth rate places Panama second in the entire region for digital adoption, trailing only Argentina. The boom is heavily anchored by local fintech solutions like Yappy, which now commands more than 1.7 million users and connects over 34,000 affiliated merchants across the nation.
Shifted consumer habits are similarly detailed in Mastercard’s "State of Digitalization and Financial Inclusion" report. The study found that 81% of surveyed Panamanians regularly use fintech or digital channels—a figure closing in on the 87% who report using conventional banking services.
Consumer confidence has played a pivotal role in this adoption curve. According to Mastercard, 87% of respondents trust that digital payment systems effectively safeguard their money and personal information. When completing transactions, account-based bank transfers emerged as the go-to tool, with 67% of surveyed users relying on them over the past six months to navigate an increasingly cashless economy.
