Open Standard has announced the upcoming launch of Open USD (OUSD), a new stablecoin designed to serve as an open infrastructure for global digital payments. Backed by more than 140 companies across the financial, technology, payments, and digital asset sectors, the initiative is already being recognized as one of the industry's most ambitious collaborations.
Led by Zach Abrams, the company aims to address several of the biggest challenges facing today's stablecoins. These include high minting and redemption costs, limited revenue-sharing opportunities for ecosystem partners, and the lack of governance influence for businesses building products on top of third-party issuers.
Open USD is built around three core principles:
The company also confirmed that Open USD's reserves will be held by regulated financial institutions and managed in compliance with U.S. regulatory requirements.
Open USD is designed to support a wide range of real-world use cases, including financial institutions, payment service providers, fintech companies, cryptocurrency exchanges, DeFi protocols, digital marketplaces, and even AI-powered applications capable of executing instant, automated payments.
One of the project's strongest signals of momentum is the level of industry support it has already attracted. Participants include Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Stripe, Adyen, BlackRock, BNY, Standard Chartered, BBVA, Google, Shopify, Mercado Libre, IBM, Coinbase, Ripple, Solana, Base, and Fireblocks, among many others.
Several industry leaders have also voiced their support for the initiative. Samara Cohen said that a stablecoin with neutral governance and shared economics could help drive the next phase of digital asset adoption. Meanwhile, Will Gaybrick revealed that Open USD is expected to become the default stablecoin for businesses operating on Stripe, highlighting the project's strong commercial potential.
Companies joining the Open Standard ecosystem will receive technical documentation, integration support, and the opportunity to share in the revenue generated through Open USD adoption, a model that sets the project apart from many existing stablecoins.
While Open Standard has confirmed that Open USD will launch later this year, the company has not yet announced an official release date.
